Daniel Hess, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in operative and non-operative treatment of hand and upper extremity musculoskeletal pathology with a sub-specialty certification in hand surgery. He earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville and his hand surgery, upper extremity and microvascular surgery fellowship at Duke University Health System in Durham, North Carolina.

Thumb carpal metacarpal joint (CMCJ) arthritis is common. Surgical denervation is an option for symptomatic CMCJ arthritis. Articular branches of denervation can be performed using a single volar incision. Synovectomy at the CMCJ can also be performed at the same time. Short recovery period is noted.
